Questions you need to ask yourself before purchasing any data collection equipment:

  1. How long do I intend on using this device for this application?
  2. Is this device going to make the job easier and more enjoyable for the employee using the device? Get input from the employees who are going to use the device. If they approve of the device, they will use the device.
  3. Do I need an extended warranty? If so, is a comprehensive (no fault) warranty available? What will I do about spares? Should I purchase an advanced replacement warranty?

Not all rugged mobile tech computers are created equally. Mobile computers have different specifications regarding:

  • Shock. Most manufacturers will have a rating of 4-6 foot drops to concrete
  • Water and Dust. You will typically see a rating for IP (International Protection rating). Most devices should be at least IP54. (refer to the following bullet points to understand the IP ratings
    • The first digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against the ingress of solid objects (5 – dust protected, 6 – dust tight)
    • The second digit indicates the level of protection against the ingress of water (4 – splashing water, 5 – water jets, 6 – powerful water jets, 7 – immersion up to 1 Meter)
  • Temperature Operating Range

Let Excalibur help you with these decisions. We’ve worked in a variety of environments and can make your decision easier.
